Synopsis
A year ago, Julie’s parents died in a car crash. She moves and meets new people, argues, plays sports, goes to an amusement park… As she wanders through the sunny summer of 1996, she grows, changes and blossoms. This fully independent film is Alexandre Lavigne’s first feature. It is made entirely from grainy video footage, steeped in a nostalgic 1990s aesthetic. There is a disconcerting intimacy here, with privileged, almost secret, access to deeply private thoughts and a bygone time.
Direction
Alexandre Lavigne
As a trained comedian, you might have seen Alexandre in Hubert & Fanny in the role of Hubert’s disabled brother, Maxime Morin. He also gained notoriety by portraying the villain in Vincent Biron’s movie Prank, which was very well received in Venice and at TIFF and was awarded the people’s choice award at Montreal’s FNC. Carnaval is Alexandre’s first directing experience, but also his first production, scenario, editing, distribution… and so on. In short, he played many roles towards the completion of this infinitely personal project.
